For quite a while now, I’ve been avoiding reading the forums and community discussion on Finnish game news sites. While I do perfectly understand that this problem is world wide and any popular site has it’s trolls, and that being Finnish myself I sort of take this closer to heart, but it still seems like the state of the comments is pretty fucking low.
There’s already one news site where I purposefully try to avoid seeing even the first comment under the article. Now I do like the quality of the news posts and articles on average, no gripes there. But it just makes me want to cry when I see the comments. Seriously, I’d rather read the Barrens Chat for an hour while poking myself in the eye with a Nikkei knife than participate in the comments.
Perhaps it’s the fact that somehow many people, myself included, in Finland think that if you’ve nothing good to say, don’t say anything. And then only the rotten tomatos post there. Like after every single article related to WoW — be it good or bad or whatever — one of the top three comments is “DURR, DOES SOMEONE STILL LIEK PLAY WOW FOR REALZ??! LOLKEK”. And so it continues from there.
Yeah, fine. Trolls are what the community is about and to a certain extent, I accept this and turn a blind eye. But since I’m now planning, or actually more like waiting for it now, my trip to the states and I’ve paid a bit of attention to the state of the dollar and now there’s the news about the entire world banking scene going to hell, I read some news on a major Finnish business magazine. There was an article about how while Finland is fairly well protected in this, if it really blows up, we’re going to suffer too, and then something about how the stock opened on Wall Street the other day.
And what do I see as the first comment? A troll going on how “DURR, ITS NOTLIEK THE USA CANT JUST LIEK PRINT MILLION DOLLAR BILZZ AND GIVE THEM TO PEEPS; LOLOLO”. Oh my god. Wasn’t there any good stories on digg today that you could have trolled about the new iPod or something? I don’t really care about economy or politics, and I don’t read the sites apart from situations like this where I’m just hoping that the dollar is as low as possible when I go there so I can buy shiny things with my (€). It would never even cross my mind that unlike something I do know about, I would go and comment on stuff like investment banks and make a complete fool of myself. ANONYMOUSLY!
Pages like that shouldn’t even allow anonymous posting. I tend to normally be pretty straight forward, especially if it’s a site I visit and participate in often. There are times when I post under a pseudonym because it’s not something I should be commenting on but I feel like I have to set something straight. But.. gahh.. it’s infuriates me when this happens.
On a side note, excuse my ignorance, but I feel like smiling politely at the story about RIM (the company that makes the Blackberry) that might end up in trouble if this continues, because 40 000 people on Wall Street might lose jobs. And then two rows under that they say that they sold 5.6 million phones last year. You’d think that 5.56 million phones should still be enough, right?
