They are soon here

Indeed, both of them. The trip to california is now a week away, sweeeeet! Also, I’ll have it open before, lacking content, the new Onevice.com is opening very soon, and hopefully I get my stuff sorted out so I can post a few clips from the trip as it happens.

My laptop is going to have a hard time handling 1080p footage so it’ll be something very simple or I’ll try to use my friends laptop for it. But yeah, footage from California and Blizzcon 08 incoming. We still don’t have any real plans of what to expect or where to go apart from the convention center, but I’m sure we’ll manage. Both are watching Madventures to get a few pointers and tricks that we could maybe use. You don’t want to copy something that’s already made, but Madventures is the bomb, can’t go wrong there.

Also, it’s like 31 degrees in LA tomorrow, compared to the 15 and rain here, I’m going to love it. Get the shorts out again, sunglasses, go buy some cool shirts. Get some mohitos and head to Santa Monica Beach. Mmm..

Now I fear what others will say

I kind of tried to avoid this topic, as it’s a sad, sad thing. It’s the school shootings.

I have family and friends living in Kauhajoki, but they should all be ok, thank god. The first case a year ago didn’t really shake me as much, as I’m here in France and it all seems so far away. This time I was worried.

That’s not the point though. The point is that now everyone and their grandmother are searching the Internet for this type of behavior and signs of it. I went around and removed all the pictures and videos of me on irc-galleria and vimeo and facebook where it’s me or my friends with guns. I shouldn’t have to. But I rather do it myself than let someone tell me to do it or just take it down for me. I have a healthy respect for firearms and the dangers they posses and hopefully I will never snap and do anything as horrible as this. But it doesn’t mean that I can’t enjoy some target practice or something like that. Oh well.. Maybe in a few months, a year.. One day it’ll be okay again.

Another thing, I know there’s not a lot of people who read this and even less who could answer, but I’d be curious to know, how the hell can you contact the Finnish police after office hours when you are calling from abroad. It’s impossible. Every number you find just says that basically if you can’t wait until tomorrow, just use the national number for police, 10022. Well good luck trying to call that from abroad. I wont say anything about why I needed to call, but let’s just say I’m fairly ticked off about this. It shouldn’t be so god damned difficult.

I’d say look out cats, dogs are going to out-evolve you as pets soon. Not that dogs were behind cats anyway, being far superior in all aspects. But now it’s not even a competition anymore.

Finntroll

For quite a while now, I’ve been avoiding reading the forums and community discussion on Finnish game news sites. While I do perfectly understand that this problem is world wide and any popular site has it’s trolls, and that being Finnish myself I sort of take this closer to heart, but it still seems like the state of the comments is pretty fucking low.

There’s already one news site where I purposefully try to avoid seeing even the first comment under the article. Now I do like the quality of the news posts and articles on average, no gripes there. But it just makes me want to cry when I see the comments. Seriously, I’d rather read the Barrens Chat for an hour while poking myself in the eye with a Nikkei knife than participate in the comments.

Perhaps it’s the fact that somehow many people, myself included, in Finland think that if you’ve nothing good to say, don’t say anything. And then only the rotten tomatos post there. Like after every single article related to WoW — be it good or bad or whatever — one of the top three comments is “DURR, DOES SOMEONE STILL LIEK PLAY WOW FOR REALZ??! LOLKEK”. And so it continues from there.

Yeah, fine. Trolls are what the community is about and to a certain extent, I accept this and turn a blind eye. But since I’m now planning, or actually more like waiting for it now, my trip to the states and I’ve paid a bit of attention to the state of the dollar and now there’s the news about the entire world banking scene going to hell, I read some news on a major Finnish business magazine. There was an article about how while Finland is fairly well protected in this, if it really blows up, we’re going to suffer too, and then something about how the stock opened on Wall Street the other day.

And what do I see as the first comment? A troll going on how “DURR, ITS NOTLIEK THE USA CANT JUST LIEK PRINT MILLION DOLLAR BILZZ AND GIVE THEM TO PEEPS; LOLOLO”. Oh my god. Wasn’t there any good stories on digg today that you could have trolled about the new iPod or something? I don’t really care about economy or politics, and I don’t read the sites apart from situations like this where I’m just hoping that the dollar is as low as possible when I go there so I can buy shiny things with my (€). It would never even cross my mind that unlike something I do know about, I would go and comment on stuff like investment banks and make a complete fool of myself. ANONYMOUSLY!

Pages like that shouldn’t even allow anonymous posting. I tend to normally be pretty straight forward, especially if it’s a site I visit and participate in often. There are times when I post under a pseudonym because it’s not something I should be commenting on but I feel like I have to set something straight. But.. gahh.. it’s infuriates me when this happens.

On a side note, excuse my ignorance, but I feel like smiling politely at the story about RIM (the company that makes the Blackberry) that might end up in trouble if this continues, because 40 000 people on Wall Street might lose jobs. And then two rows under that they say that they sold 5.6 million phones last year. You’d think that 5.56 million phones should still be enough, right?

ViceVideo layout design

ViceVideo layout design

It’s been a while since I’ve done any real web stuff. And I’ve never actually made my own Wordpress theme. But I have searched and searched for a theme I could use for a video site for onevice.com but I just couldn’t find anything free and on a good lisence.

So a few days ago I started working on making one. Threw up a little layout in photoshop and asked around if anyone who knew stuff about html could make the base template, then for me to add the wordpress stuff to it. But I was too anxious to get it on it’s way, so just went ahead and did it. 4-5 hours later, I’d say I’m around 75% done with the html side, not really started on the wordpress side of it, but I at least have some plans and been reading up on it how it works.

The theme will be released to public too once it’s in the condition that it can be used by others too, some nice license like creative commons share-alike. In the mean time, the page up to this point is here and you can take a peek at the current progress.

Now it will feature for now integration with Vimeo, though yesterday (even though it was a bit delayed) I was shocked with some of their announcements. But I won’t post about it here, since I wanted to make a bigger article on it on OneVice, as that page needs content too, heh, and it will be more to the point.

First off, having friends is nice, innit? They look out for you, have your back and make sure to wake you up if you fall asleep in the shuttle so you don’t have to walk from Versailles when the bus is already back to it’s depot. Right? Right?

Yeah, anyway. I got some free money in my mailbox when I got home. Free American Express! Woot.

No, wait. It’s not real. Curses. I have to settle with my mastercard and visa then. Fine.

(Poor bus driver almost had a heart attack when I went to ask him to stop so I can get out.)

Curse these kids and their hula hoops and electricity. Someone has their vinyl’s up a bit too loud in my neighbourhood. I’m not sure if they are watching a movie or just listening to their transistor radio, but that opera is driving me crazy. All I wanna do is watch the Entourage season premiere in peace.

And as the fall season line up is lining up, it also means that summer is over. And boy, I can feel it. Now it doesn’t get too cold in France compared to Finland for example, but still c’mon. Ever heard of even double paned windows? I live on the ground floor, it gets pretty cold during the night already. And not to forget, I have central heating and what that means is that I have no control over it. Stop saving electricity and give me more heat up in this bitch. And the little “drains” in the windows for the water to go outside when you wash it (I live alone, I have no woman to wash them) literally blow cold air inside. God damn it France, again, get into the 21st century now, please.

also.. it’s under a month now..
